Creating a Hand-Blown Glass Pumpkin: A Halloween Special

With Halloween just around the corner, I decided to embrace the season by hand-blowing a glass pumpkin from scratch. Pumpkins are a staple of Halloween decor, and this 9-minute video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the process of transforming molten glass into an iconic seasonal symbol.

The creation of the glass pumpkin starts with gathering the molten glass and shaping the round body. As I work through the piece, you'll notice the way the glass evolves into its classic form, with ribs that mirror the natural grooves of a real pumpkin. Maintaining the right shape and thickness takes careful control, as the glass must be constantly rotated and reheated to prevent cooling too fast and cracking.

Color plays a huge role in this piece. For this pumpkin, I chose vibrant autumn hues, such as fiery orange with hints of amber, which glow beautifully when lit. The colors were specifically selected to reflect the warmth and spirit of the Halloween season, making the pumpkin a perfect addition to any festive display.

Once the body of the pumpkin is formed, I add the finishing touch—a twisting, vine-like stem. This detail really brings the pumpkin to life and adds character to the final piece. The stem isn’t just functional, it’s also a design element that enhances the natural look of the pumpkin, making it feel like it was just picked from the patch.

Seasonal glass creations like this are always a joy to make, especially when they capture the essence of the holidays. Whether you’re decorating your home or looking for a unique gift, this hand-blown pumpkin adds a touch of handmade craftsmanship to any Halloween celebration.
